Personally, I don't think it matters much. My main Necro builds are based solely around Necro skills, so I have /Mo as a 2nd just for the rez.

Edit - actually, it occurs to me that my MM build specifically uses /Mo for Heal Area.

When in doubt for a caster, I go /E for Glyph of lesser energy alone. But then, I've never been happy with my chars secondaries, ever

there is no "best" class... there is no "best" class combination... all boils down to what you like and are comfortable with

I went this route, taking Monk as my 2nd class for Heal Area.

Then I met Olias and he's so much better as a MM than I could ever be that my N/Mo basically holds crafting materials that don't fit in my chest.

I'd say it doesn't matter much. Necros don't need secondary skills that much unless you're running MoP

N/A for assassin's promise ; dash
N/Rt for a splash of restoration or channeling (splinter weapon, nightmare weapon, warmonger's weapon, weapon of shadow, weapon of warding, vengeful weapon, protective was kaolai, Life, Spirit Light, Mend body and soul)
N/P for Fall back Stand/your ground at 8-10 spec ; It's only a flesh wound in PVP
N/Me for arcane echo ; crippling anguish and other stuff in PVP
N/Mo for smiting (strength of honor x3, smite hex is possible) or prots (protective spirit, aegis, shield of absorption)
N/E for ward of stability (not glyph since you have signet of lost souls and soul reaping) and glyph of swiftness
N/W for tactics (spec a few points to get a shield's max armor) ; You're all alone! (YAA) in PvP
N/D used to be for Conviction (MM) + Mystic regen (MM) ; Fleeting stability/harrier's haste/enchanted haste/Featherfoot Grace speed boost ... you could probably make some sort of toucher gimmick with Dark aura/demonic flesh and the Dervish flash enchantments.
Only thing is N/R... not much use for that (Natural stride in AB/JQ with 8 wilderness maybe)

Plus you can change your 2nd soon enough and then pick and choose it depending on what build you wish to run. So don't worry about it too much.

If you are new to the game and don't have skills unlocked, I'd go /monk just so you can get better skills for your heroes. Soon enough that won't even matter.

I think mine is N/Me (secondary mesmer). Give that a try, it worked well for me. Since you're in nightfall you will be able to change it sooner than later.

In my case, I stopped playing MM myself (it's Livia who is usually the MM), but that doesn't mean I moth-balled my Necro. My Curses based N/Mo build is quite powerful and very useful.
